Suppose you're on a game show. There are three doors. Behind one is a car; behind the other two, goats. You pick a door — say, Door 1. The host, who knows what's behind each door, opens another door — say, Door 3 — revealing a goat.
The host then asks: “Do you want to switch to Door 2?”
Counterintuitively, switching gives you a 2/3 chance of winning, while staying only gives you 1/3.
This is because your initial pick had a 1/3 chance of being correct. The host's reveal doesn't change that — it concentrates the remaining 2/3 probability onto the other unopened door.
Most students read this explanation, nod, and still don't believe it. The intuition that “it's 50/50” is too strong to overcome with text alone.
